The two Taff Vale Railway carriages rescued last year (see February News) have been externally cosmetically restored at a site near Bewdley in Worcestershire. They are to be moved to the Gwili Railway towards the end of August where it is planned to use both coach bodies as static tea rooms.

Photographs show the progress on. The springs, spring hangers,”J” brackets,”W” irons and axle box covers have been wire brushed to remove rust and flaking paint. These areas were then painted with a metal primer and a black gloss finish. Not only does it look better but protects the metal from the weather. Nuts and threads were cleaned and greased and all split pins will be exchanged for new.

The GVCG team having assisted on two MK1s this year spent five weeks in May repainting one of the railway’s Class 117 DMU cars. The photos show the various stages of preparation and the nearly finished results.
The DMU’s place in the workshop has now been taken up by GWR No 216 and TVR No 220 carriages for the remainder of the year.

British Railways CK No 16232. The transformation from being a dirty and weather beaten coach to having the body sides flattened with 240 grit wet and dry sandpaper and then gived two coats of varnish.

The next vehicle the GVCG crew will help with will be a DMU car. Afterwards our vintage vehicles will enter the shed for the summer and hopefully completion of all work to ensure both are back in use in 2012.
